GRAND SETTING: Inveraray Castle will host a fundraising event to help Oban Phoenix Cinema get the projectors rolling up once more.

A glittering fundraiser to reopen Oban’s only cinema will see Oscar-winning Dame Judi Dench being interviewed by Clive Anderson in the grand surroundings of Inveraray Castle.

The Duke of Argyll has agreed to host the event at his ancestral home to help the community group which owns Oban Phoenix Cinema raise funds to get the curtain up once more.

The acclaimed film and theatre actress and the famous talk-show host have agreed to become patrons of the cinema as they are both regular visitors to Argyll.

On a passage to India

It may be Oscar season now, but studios across Hollywood are still planning their potential contenders for 2011 and beyond.  One of the regular players, Fox Searchlight, announced that a new John Madden directed dramedy, "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," will begin shooting on Oct. 10 in India.

The picture will reunite Madden with his "Shakespeare in Love" stars Judi Dench, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for the Miramax romantic comedy, and Tom Wilkinson. "Hotel" also features Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel.  Madden also worked with Dench on his big screen breakthrough, "Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown."

Based on the novel by Deborah Moggach, "Marigold Hotel" centers on a group of British retirees who decide to spend their later years in the less expensive and exotically exciting South East Asia power.  Believing paradise awaits them at the Marigold Hotel, they soon discover an unexpectedly more difficult new life.

In a statement released by the studio, Madden said, “This is a gorgeous script – witty, moving and hilarious – with a wonderful feel for its subject – India.  It’s rare to find one that traverses comedy, romance, and melancholy with such a lightness of touch and it’s proved to be a magnet for the cast of your dreams: actors I know and would want to work with in every film – Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson; and actors I’d feel lucky to be in the room with – Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, and an amazing ensemble.  It’s a great project about a world that defies all categorization. No one could come to India and not be changed by it.”

Midsummer Night's Dream

I give you Michael Coveney's blog:

6.02.2010 As theatrical reunions go, the one that took place at the Rose Theatre, Kingston last night was more impressive than most.

Most critics this morning appear to have moderated this effusiveness and declared of the Dream, “I’ll give it four.”

Which is fair enough. Just to see the play at all was a mighty relief after the scrum in the big open bar of the Rose.

I fear my old friend Tim Walker, the much maligned diarist-cum-critic on the Sunday Telegraph, was too deep in conspiratorial conversation with Mail veteran Rod Gilchrist to have spotted the likes of conductor John Eliot Gardiner, Pink Floyd legend Dave Gilmour, screenwriter Stephen Poliakoff, Hall’s son Ed with his Dutch baroness wife Issy van Randwyck, and RSC notables Trevor Nunn and Ian McKellen.

But you had to be there to hear Dame Judi give definitive definition to Titania’s great speeches. She was magnificent, and no-one was in any sort of mood to complain about the production being rather starchy and old-fashioned.
